Carbon Footprinting

Buildings have a significant impact on energy use and the environment. Buildings use 40% of the primary energy and nearly 50% of the related carbon emissions. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has established an aggressive goal to promote zero-energy buildings and the AIA, USGBC, ASHRAE and others support the 2030 challenge which would make buildings "carbon neutral" by 2030. Zero Energy Design is accomplished by greatly reduced energy needs through efficiency gains so that the balance of the energy needs can be supplied by renewable energy technologies. In this talk, we will:® Discuss the means to achieving the 2030 Challenge® Explore the concept of zero energy carbon neutral design® Preview some exciting new tools for calculating the building carbon footprint

Presenter: Speaker Loren Abraham is an architect, author, educator and researcher who has helped develop "green" building standards, guidelines and design tools such as LEED, the Whole Building Design Guide (wbdg.org) and Energy 10 software. Loren is currently an adjunct professor in the School of Architecture at the University of Minnesota.and an instructor for the Department of Energy and the American Institute of Architects. He was a founding member of the US Green Building Council, past chairman of the Sustainable Buildings Industries Council and he has worked for the White House and William McDonough + Partners.
