On the Light Track - Opportunities for Engineers

The Stimulus Program dedicated $8 billion dollars for a national High Speed Rail Program and the federal government has committed another $1 billion per year for the next six years. There is very little high-speed rail design capability in the United States. In the current federal transportation funding program, which expired on Sept. 30, 2009 the federal government will invest approximately $9 billion in transit New Starts. Examples of these investments are the Northstar Commuter Rail and the Central Corridor LRT project. Generally the New Starts federal share is 50 percent, thus the total investment is close to $20 billion. Virtually all of the work is being designed by consulting engineers. The outlook for the next federal authorization is that a greater percentage of funding will be dedicated to transit. These projects will use a variety of implementation methods including: Design/Bid/Build, Design/Build and Public Private Partnerships (PPP).

The presentation will focus on how to develop a strategy to become involved in this growing market from a Twin Cities perspective, a national focus and even an international approach. The specific topics covered will be:

·The market segments and project types
·The components of design required for a project
·The current local, national, and international industry leaders
·Desired characteristics of teaming partners
·Opportunities for participation
·Alternative strategies for market entry

Presenter: Dick Wolsfeld is the President of AECOM Transportation which has 5200 employees and $1.1 billion of revenue. AECOM currently has 36 active New Start transit projects throughout North America and globally and is ranked number 1 by "ENR" magazine in transit engineering. AECOM is the prime contractor on the Central Corridor LRT project. He has been involved in transit projects in the following areas: Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, Denver, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Minneapolis, Atlanta, Orlando, New York, Pittsburgh, London and Abu Dhabi.
